The National Action Group for LGBT+ Traveller and Roma Rights is looking to recruit a 

Development Worker for LGBT+ Travellers & Roma

Full-time, 6-month contract, for immediate start

The National Action Group for LGBT+ Traveller and Roma Rights was formed in 2016, to advance greater awareness, understanding and inclusion of LGBT+ Travellers and Roma. 

National Action Group members are from Traveller organisations, National LGBT+ organisations along with regional representation and LGBT+ Traveller reps. The National Action Group works from Human Rights and Community Development principles.

Aims of the National Action Group for LGBT+ Traveller and Roma Rights:

  • Promote and support the inclusion of LGBT+ Travellers and Roma needs and issues at local level
  • Promote and support the inclusion of LGBT+ Travellers and Roma needs and issues within Traveller and Roma services and organisations, as well as LGBT+ service and organisations.
  • To develop tools and resources- including training, guides, videos, research etc- to equip all relevant communities and services to understand the needs and issues of LGBT+ Traveller & Roma and how best to support
  • To provide a platform to improve greater visibility and participation of LGBT+ Travellers and Roma in the Action Group, its activities, and its advocacy direction
  • To promote greater visibility and participation of LGBT+ Traveller and Roma in Traveller and Roma services and in LGBT+ organisations  
  • Ultimately to create the specific supports and interventions which LGBT+ Travellers and Roma need in order for them to live full lives, enjoying positive mental health and well-being, exercising their full human rights and experiencing full equality.    

About this unique and exciting Role

The National Action Group for LGBT+ Traveller and Roma Rights is recruiting for a full-time Development Worker to support the Action Group’s projects and on-going activities in 2022. The role is funded for 6 months full-time through the Dept. of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration & Youth through the grant scheme of the National LGBTI+ Inclusion Strategy. It is hoped the role can be extended subject to strong work results and further successful funding applications.

Exchange House Ireland is the fiscal agent for the grant, while the National Action Group together with Exchange House Ireland will manage the worker on a day-to-day basis. 

Role / Responsibilities

  • Responding to enquiries by email and phone
  • Organising, attending National Action Group meetings and leading on key follow-up activities
  • Upkeeping and replying to becomeaAlly@gmail.com
  • Active support to the LGBTI+ Traveller & Roma peer research project- supporting logistics; supporting the promotion of the research; supporting recruitment of Focus Group participants; supporting survey dissemination
  • Awareness-raising work- using Calendar 2022; LGBT+ Traveller videos / Guide / talks to engage Traveller services, Roma services, LGBT+ services
  • Providing support to LGBT+ Travellers and Roma that may need advice or signposting from the group
  • Attending relevant events and networks representing the Action group

Essential criteria

  • A strong commitment and motivation towards Traveller and Roma rights, and LGBT+ rights and equality
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Traveller & Roma community, culture and the Traveller & Roma sectors
  • Awareness of relevant LGBT+ support organisations and services
  • Ability to communicate with warmth and compassion
  • Strong listening skills and strong empathy
  • Enthusiasm, energy and drive to make a difference to the work 
  • Ability to speak confidently in a group setting
  • Respect for and understanding of cultural diversity
  • Strong teamwork ability
  • Good written and spoken English
  • IT skills – be able to send and receive emails and use Microsoft word and social media
  • Understanding of and commitment to confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently and on own initiative
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends
  • Willingness to travel to different parts of Ireland

Desirable criteria

  • Direct experience of working with Travellers/Roma, in a voluntary or paid capacity
  • Direct experience of working with LGBTI+ people, in a voluntary or paid capacity
  • Experience of working with vulnerable people
