Exchange House Youth Services went on a youth residential trip to Glendalough in county Wicklow. There were four youth workers and 10 young people on this trip. All the youths were different sites in Dublin.
It was a three day trip which included activities each day all aimed to educate informally in the areas of communications, personal effectiveness, social skills and history. These activities included hill walking in the sally and windy gap, taking in the scenery and history of Wicklow town. A tour was also taken in Glendalough Cemetery where we visited the 11th century’s St Kevin’s and the tower that the monks lived in also around this time. Over all the time away was very beneficial as the group engaged enthusiastically and learned while having fun.
This trip was is part of the preparation for our planned away trip to Spain to take part in the St James Way walk which will involve 22 kilometres walks most days, and sore feet and the odd blister along the way, this is the pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in North-Western Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the apostle Saint James are buried.
We will keep you posted on the walking and fitness levels.
